Top team joins Geraint to tackle growing Flood Risk in Wales
Geraint Davies [LFIG
Vice President] was appointed by Environment Minister Carwyn Jones as
Chair of Flood Risk Management Wales to oversee the delivery of the
Assembly policies for managing flood risk - constructing new defences,
maintaining existing defences, flood forecasting and flood warning
services, regulating others, and providing advice and guidance.
Flood risk management recognises that we
cannot prevent flooding but that we must minimise its impacts on
communities in the face of climate change increasing the frequency and
size of floods as well as sea levels. It will focus its attention on the
strategic problems and work with stakeholders to prioritise expenditure to
manage flood risk effectively. This will include ensuring that the
consequences of flooding are known, understood and tolerable to those who
suffer them.
Geraint is now joined by a team of leading experts to
help develop a new strategy to manage flood risk across Wales.
Half a million people live and work in areas at risk of flooding in Wales
and the estimated cost of flood damage could rise by up to 20-fold by the
year 2080. Over 170,000 homes, businesses, roads, railways, other major
structure and thousands of acres of farmland lie in flood risk areas.
The team includes two Professors (in geography and water management), the
Vice President of the National Farmers Union, consultant engineers,
Environment Agency appointees and eight councillors – including two
Leaders and four Cabinet members - representing the Welsh local
authorities.
Carwyn Jones said “I am very pleased that I now have a strong team to
take forward the new vision of managing flood risk in Wales. I have every
confidence that the newly constituted Flood Risk Management Wales team
will deliver the right service to meet the challenges posed by climate
change.”
Geraint Davies said: “Global warming and climate change are now
generally understood but the possible risks to jobs, homes and natural
habitats from flooding is not. We now have a top team in place to manage
the increasing frequency and intensity of flooding caused by climate
change. The cost of flood damage in Wales could grow from £70m to £1.4
billion by 2080. We will be shifting our focus beyond the traditional
emphasis on building and maintaining flood defences and looking at how we
best manage the land and ensure that local communities have their say. Our
priority is to manage the growing risk of flooding to people and property.
We now have the best team to help take forward the Welsh Assembly
Government's Environment Strategy in relation to flood risk – to take
appropriate measures to manage the risk of flooding and to ensure everyone
who lives in flood risk areas will understand how to live with that risk."
