DIGITAL IS THE FUTURE, BEN BRADSHAW TELLS LFIG ANNUAL DINNER - AND RETURNS FOR MORE!

Guests at the LFIG Annual Dinner at the Reform Club heard the Rt Hon Ben Bradshaw MP tell them that the UK’s competitive future is digital.
The Secretary of State for Culture Media & Sport addressed an audience of some 60 LFIG members and their guests among the venerable portals of the Reform Club’s Library on 15 December 2009.
He emphasised that the UK needs to pull its weight competitively in global terms if it is to succeed in the future, by mobilising resources in terms of the creative industries and their wealth of embedded experience and expertise, as well as their worldwide reputation. The importance of the digital contribution to this success could not be overestimated.
At the end of the evening, guests put questions to Ben on a number of subjects: intellectual property protection, online protection for minors, ethnic minority participation in the Olympic Games 2012 site construction and development, and the skills needs of Britain’s educational establishments recently charged with bringing together commercial and educational expertise by Lord Mandelson, not least in a creative context.
In an unusual move, Ben returned to the event to meet with guests, after having to dash off to a vote at the House of Commons.
Dr Peter Slowe, LFIG Chair, in his welcome speech, pledged the organisation to support Ben in what he termed his “massive portfolio”. LFIG would contribute its own expertise wherever possible, he said, in both policy development and advisory services.
Adrian Bailey, LFIG’s Parliamentary Ambassador, proposed a Vote of Thanks at the end of the evening, and also took the opportunity to make a rousing call for LFIG and Labour Party members to contribute to winning the impending General Election.
Guests included Lord and Lady Clinton-Davis, Sir Dennis and Lady Landau, and Sir Peter Heap, former LFIG Chair. Amongst guests from the creative industries were Chris Craker (musical composer for the ‘Harry Potter’ films) ; Cat Gazzoli (Chair, Slow Food UK); Shane Holland (Chair, Slow Food London); Stephen Hall (University of Winchester Creative Industries) and Len Brown (BAFTA-award winning Footstep Productions)
The evening was also able to start off with its own creative showcasing at the reception before the dinner – with a jazz pianist playing, for the first time in LFIG’s history!
The event was organised by Vice Chair Nick Waloff, who also chairs LFIG’s Creative Industries Policy Group, and an Advisory Committee of Anthony Shrubsall, Ian Wallace and Andrew Guy. Thanks are due to all the contributors to its success, not least Terry Thornhill, LFIG’s administrator.
LFIG Annual Dinner 2009
The Labour Finance & Industry Group’s Annual Dinner will be held at the Reform Club, 104 Pall Mall, London SW1Y 5EW on Tuesday 15 December 2009, 7.00 – 10.00pm.
All members and their guests are very welcome to attend. The cost of tickets will be £75.00 per person, payable in advance. This will include reception drinks, a 3 course meal and wine.
This year’s guest of honour and keynote speaker is the Rt.Hon. Ben Bradshaw MP, Minister for Culture, Media and Sport.
Given that creative industries have now overtaken manufacturing for the first time in terms of their contribution to the UK’s GNP, and their crucial importance on our economic recovery, his commitment underscores the need to back new and emerging sectors as well as existing ones in order to compete effectively at a global level.
As there is likely to be considerable interest in the speaker, an early booking is advisable. To book, please complete and return a downloadable application form to Terry Thornhill, LFIG Administrator, at Projects-Abroad, Aldsworth House, Goring, West Sussex BN12 4TX.
Please note that all tickets must be paid for upfront, otherwise admission will not be possible.
If you have any questions or queries about the dinner, please contact organiser Nick Waloff, Vice Chair, LFIG, on either (mobile) 07710-225638 or (DDL) 020-7793-8659.
