This year's speakers
include:
The theme of
this year’s event is “increasing international trade as a means of
improving relations with the third world and Muslim nations”. We thought
this very apt and appealing to Labour delegates in light of recent events
and the urgency to improve in some way or other our relations with third
world and Muslim populations. This is a matter which I know is very close
to our Life President’s heart Sir Sigmund Sternberg.
There will
of course be beverages and foodstuffs and plenty of witty comments from
Sir Peter Heap and time for questions and answer sessions with the
Minister. If you can get down to Brighton for the day or even just the
Fringe event itself that would be great.
For those of you who don’t know much about Ian
Pearson
please read his parliamentary biography below:
Ian Pearson
entered the House of Commons in the first by-election after Tony Blair was
elected leader of the Labour Party in December 1994. He was appointed a
Minister of State for Trade in the Department of Trade and Industry and
the Foreign Office in May 2005. Before that, he was a Minister in the
Northern Ireland Office from November 2002, having previously served as a
Government Whip and on the Education and Employment Select Committee. Ian
takes a deep interest in industry, treasury and regional policy issues. He
was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Paymaster General at HM
Treasury from 1997-98 and served on the Treasury Select Committee as an
opposition back bencher before the 1997 General Election. Before his
election, Ian headed WMEB Group, a West Midlands-based economic
development company providing development capital to small and medium
sized companies and consultancy to a range of public and private sector
clients. Previously he has worked for a large accountancy practice, a
national urban charity and a firm of strategic policy consultants. Ian
Pearson has a degree in economics and politics from Balliol College,
Oxford, and a master's and a doctorate in Industrial and Business Studies
