LFIG 2005
ANNUAL XMAS DINNER
LFIG had the
great pleasure of welcoming the very distinguished “Father of New
Labour”, Lord Neil Kinnock, as our main speaker and guest of
honour at our Annual Dinner.
We were also
fortunate to be able to welcome our Parliamentary Ambassador, Nigel Griffiths MP and Deputy
Leader of the House of Commons, and Sir Peter Heap, Chairman of
LFIG.
There was an array of LFIG business leaders, party members and invited guests
as well as plenty of wine, good food and, above all, great conversation!
The Dinner was held
at the Reform Club on Tuesday, 6th December where everyone enjoyed a
reception and dinner.
Neil Kinnock (The
Rt Hon Lord (Neil) Kinnock of Bedwellty)
Elected in 1970 as member for Bedwellty
(later Islwyn), he became a member of the National Executive Committee of
the Labour Party in 1978. He was known as a left-winger, and gained renown
for his outspoken attacks on Margaret Thatcher's handling of the Falklands
War.
Neil Kinnock had the task of leading the Labour Party during its so-called
"unelectable" period. Although he was seen as very much the coming man
when he succeeded Michael Foot, he had a long and difficult path to bring
the party back to its pre-Thatcher position. Kinnock was responsible for
many of the reforms to the party which were built upon by John Smith and
Tony Blair until Labour was elected in 1997.
